We can walk in the spirit.
We believe that the words of God are true, just like Abraham did. We act and live and do just as though we believe those words are true.
Recognizing that we have a spirit is key to being able to “Walk in the spirit” or “Live by the spirit” like the Bible teaches us. Many people are just being led around by their emotions, feelings, and thoughts. That is not our spirit. Many people are led by their physical desires and that is also not their spirit.
Many people are led by their reason, and that is not their spirit. A lot of people are unable to tell the difference between their spirit and any other internal “voice” they have.
One way we can tell the difference, is to be mindful of what is happening in our life.
The Apostle Paul Said: "Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God."
Romans 8:5-8
What is happening in our mind? Is it full of things that please God? Or is it full of things that please our flesh? Right away we can make the call, and know if we are living by the spirit.
Our spirit will never think or lead us in a way that is unpleasing to God, because our spirit only knows how to please God. Our spirit is born of God. It's our "consciousness." Our spirit is "God's mini-me," so to say.
Are you unsure if the things are pleasing to God or the flesh? The answer to those things are in God’s Word. As we spend more time reading His words, and putting those in our mind and in our heart, they will help us to know the difference, choice by choice.
Watchman Nee said many christians are not "Spiritual" despite what they think they are, but are actually "Soulical." They live by their soul (Greek Psyche) instead of their spirit.
In Romans 7, the apostle Paul describes the life of someone who is living by their soul instead of their spirit. He describes the struggle of wanting to do something that is pleasing to God, but instead doing the opposite. Our soul is amazing. It is our consciousness, our emotions, our mind. It is who we are.
In the Old Testament, a great example is Israel in the wilderness. Every time there was apparent difficulty, they immediately started complaining and whining. Saying, "God hates us! He brought us here to kill us." No matter how many amazing miracles they had just seen, there was no confidence in God’s words. There was no change happening on the inside.
Once we believed in and accepted Jesus' death and resurrection, we became born again. Our once dead spirit, was regenerated. We became born of the Spirit. This gives us another and better voice to listen to vs. listening to our soul, our mind.
When we find ourselves in a place of difficulty we can listen to our spirit instead of our flesh. Our spirit will tell us to trust God, to believe what his word said. It will remind us of what God has done in the past and give us confidence for right now!
Paul and Silas were in prison. They had been stripped and beaten for doing the work of God... casting out a demon. And at midnight that night, they were still praising God! In the middle of an impossible situation, a terrible painful situation, they were still praising God. They didn’t wait until midnight to begin!
This is a great example of living by the spirit. Our spirit tells us to trust God and praise God constantly no matter what happens in our life.
What was the result? The prison was shook by a supernatural earthquake and all of their chains and doors were unlocked! The warden saw and believed and he and his entire household were born again because of it!
Miracles not only happen, but they become normal occurrences as we believe and do God's Word and live by our spirit vs. our soul.
Mark 16:17-18
"And these signs will accompany those who believe: In my name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up snakes with their hands; and when they drink deadly poison, it will not hurt them at all; they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well!"
What about you, do these signs follow you around?

P.S. The Bible says that we must be born again to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. If you aren't sure whether you have been born again and you want to make sure....
Just declare with your mouth, out loud, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead and you will be saved. You will be born again. Born of the Spirit.
